Learning and Fun at Glenwood 50+
Howard County citizens over the age of 50 have a wealth of resources and programs available to us. One of my favorite is the Glenwood 50+ Center. The center features a fitness center, weekday lunch, and variety of classes. Most of the classes are free or cost a nominal amount.
A Fitness Center membership costs just $25 per year and is open weekday mornings from 7am to 10am and afternoons from 1pm to 3pm. Glenwood offers regular fitness classes, including yoga, a seated exercise class, Zumba and line dancing. Members of the 50+ Center can register online or in person at the center’s front desk.
In addition to fitness classes, the Glenwood Center offers a number of on-going or drop in events to help member keep track of their health issues. Each Monday a pharmacist is available to answer questions about medications. Don Hamilton meets one on one with attendees from 9am to 10am. On the second and third Tuesdays of the month a nurse conducts blood pressure screening. The nurse will keep a record of the readings. Medicare participants of any age or their care givers can receive help with filling out forms on the Second Tuesdays of the month by appointment.
For members seeking to expand their horizons and their mind, Glenwood has programs to help. For example, January 9th offerings include “Soup Savvy.” Learn to make hearty and healthy soups. On Friday, January 17, a singer and pianist from the Lyric Opera house will present highlights of their Broadway and Opera performances. A Chili Challenge is being held on January 29th. The audience gets to judge the entries and enjoy salad, cornbread and dessert. Thinking of entering? There will be prizes as well. All these programs and more are offered for no cost or a nominal fee.
For seniors struggling with memory loss Glenwood offers Kindred Spirits social club on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9am to 1pm. Activities incude speakers, music, art and yoga. For more information call Judy Miller, facilitator of Kindred Spirits at 410-313-5441 or e-mail at jumiller@howardcountymd.gov. The program is a partnership between the Office on Aging and the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Maryland. The fee for the program is $30 per day. Some activities may have an additional fee.
