Dog Friendly Howard County

mariedogHoward County is a great place to live, work and go to school. Did you know it is a great place for pets and their owners, too? In fact, Ellicott City is one of the 10 Best Places to Live for Pet Lovers according to US News. The article sites the reasonably mild climate as making for more outdoor time for pets and owners, and the area’s four miles of open space.  But living in the area I can tell you the pet friendliness of our community is more than skin deep.

Most of our parks allow leashed pets to accompany their owners.  Worthington Park boasts two off-leash area (one for big dogs and one for the little guys) where well-behaved dogs can frolic together. There is also a separate area to practice training your pooch.  A daily permit that costs dollars is required. There is also a yearly pass available.

Is your dog a bit too adventurous for the dog park?  The nearby Daniels Dam Area of the Patapsco State Park  welcomes pets. Take a leisurely a hike along the trail or launch your kayak or canoe and paddle up stream with your furry friend.  Or you and your dog can take a pleasant dip in the river at the designated swimming area. My dog loves a trip in the kayak, with me doing all the work, while he plays the tourist. Whichever you choose, remember to put safety first and get your dog his or her very own personal floatation device.

Your dog’s tastes are more urbane take him or her for a stroll through historic Ellicott City. Don’t forget to stop by Work Play Bark!  The doggie boutique specializes in designer pet accessories and gourmet treats. My pup’s personal favorites are the carob covered pretzels.  Or place an order for your dog’s very own birthday cake.

If you happen to be walking through town on the first Friday of the month from 6 to 9 stop by the Wine Bin for Yappy Hour.  Where else can you and your dog go to enjoy a wine tasting and live music?  Donations and a part of the sales go to animal charities.

Where ever you and your animal companions go be sure to observe proper pet etiquette. Have your dog’s vaccination and registration tag. Keep your pet leashed. And be sure to clean up.  For more information about pet friendly Howard County, including welcoming hotels, more restaurants and shops go to https://www.visithowardcounty.com/discovering/pet-friendly-howard .  Most all I hope you and your pet enjoy your Howard County adventures.
