An Elegant Afternoon Tea In Ellicott City
On Main Street in Historic Ellicott City sits one of Howard County’s hidden gems, Tea on the Tiber. The diminutive tea house beckons with a tea table set up on the side walk complete with China teapots and cups. The interior has the feel of a Victorian cottage with walls covered in rich wallpapers, furniture in dark mahogany and vintage decorations. The elegantly appointed tea house serve an old fashioned, European style high tea. I visited on a chilly Sunday afternoon. On arrival we were led up the steep winding steps to the upstairs foyer. (Be sure to mention if you have a problem with stairs when you make your reservations.)
We were offered a delectable butternut squash soup as an appetizer (for additional cost). We were having After Noon Tea so it came on a three tiered tray. In the first course the scones were hot from the oven with the traditional lemon curd, clotted cream and raspberry preserves. Second course, the savories, was tomato, cumber and ham sandwiches. Final tier held, dessert cookies, a chocolate turtle bar and a large slice of red velvet cake. The food sounds dainty but was surprisingly filling. The cake was taken home for later
While the menu is pre-fixed with an assortment of sweets and savories, the tea selection was extensive. We chose from traditional selections of Early Gray, and English Breakfast. There were also more exotic varieties such as Ginger peach, Rose, and Lavender. It was served in a large porcelain teapot with old fashioned sugar cubes.. All the teas were available for purchase in the gift shop along with the toppings for scones and other assorted tea related items.
Tea on the Tiber is a pleasant and elegant way to spend the afternoon. In warmer months you can take tea on the veranda overlooking the river but on a chilly February afternoon it was the perfect way stay warm and comfortable.
