West Friendship is a small, semi-rural community in western Howard County that offers easy access to main thoroughfares and conveniences. The area of West Friendship is conveniently located at the junction of Routes 70, 32, and 144 (Frederick Road). Surrounded by some open space and farm land, West Friendship is the ideal location for many families. Strict zoning regulations have limited sprawl, and large farms and historic homes still characterize the area. Some of these farms are still inhabited by original families. West Friendship is located in the Howard County Public School System, ranked highly by U.S. News and World Report. School students may attend one of the following elementary schools: West Friendship, Bushy Park or Triadelphia Ridge, along with either Mount View Middle or Folly Quarter Middle School and Glenelg High School or Marriotts Ridge High School.
History
In the 19th century, West Friendship was frequented by travelers who found comfort in mile houses along the main road through West Friendship. Many traveled over the Frederick Turnpike which was built in the 1790s. Later in the 20th century, the paving of the West Friendship-Sykesville Road (now Route 32) in 1910, was an important development for the community. Farming was very common in the 1940’s and was the center point for family and social gatherings.
