Fulton is a community in the southern tip of Howard County, Maryland. It is centrally located within Maryland with Baltimore located about 21 miles north east and Washington DC about 19 miles to the south. Easy access to Fulton is gained from Rt 29 that runs north and south through Howard County. The Town Center of Columbia, Maryland, is only about 5 miles to the north. Of note, and just on the northern border of Fulton is one of the largest employers in Howard County, the Applied Physics Lab of the Johns Hopkins University.
A large mixed use community in Fulton is Maple Lawn. Maple Lawn opened in about 2004 and includes a ‘Main Street’ like community with shopping, restaurants and office space including condos, townhomes and single family homes. Maple Lawn has been hailed as an example of “smart growth” because it places people within walking distance of shopping, work and recreational activities.
History of Fulton The land within Fulton, Maryland, was first surveyed in 1700. The name Fulton was given to the area in honor of the popular Baltimore Sun editor Charles C. Fulton in 1882. In the mid 1800s, a 185-acre farm, Maple Lawn Farms, was formed. This same farm was nationally recognized in 2004 and was the name basis for the lovely main street community, Maple Lawn, which was developed around that same time.
Highland is an unincorporated community within Howard County and is located in the south western section of the county. Farms and horse fields can be seen here as well as wide open acreage. There is a rural crossroad that serves as the center of the community and there are historical building and landmarks dating back to the Civil War.
The homes in and around Highland are all single family homes located on properties of at least one acre. Most, if not all the homes, have private well and septic. While there are many older historical homes, there is also many neighborhoods of large 3000+ square foot homes. You can find many very large homes in this area. The schools in this area are rated very high and are some of the most desired.
Highland is a great location for those looking to commute between Washington DC and Baltimore or even Frederick, Maryland. Easy access to major roads enable residents to get to the airport within about 30 minutes.
