Back to School: Howard High
Back to School: Howard High
My series on Howard County High Schools continues with Howard High. Build in 1938 with money from the Work Progressive Administration, a New Deal Agency, is one of the older high schools in the county. The facility was remodeled in 2006 adding a new cafeteria and atrium, two wings and a track circling the football field. The former cafeteria was converted to a gymnasium. The renovation also gave space to Art and Science Department, providing room for an up-to-date dark room and laboratories. Howard High also have as a reputation of academic excellence and the statistics to back it up. Of the school’s 2013 graduates 65.6% plan to attend a 4-year college and 28.7 plan to attend a 2-year college. Ranked 18th in the State, the academic programs include:
- Academic Life Skills
- Alternative Education
- Career Research and Development
- Future Educators Association
- Reading Acceleration
- Step It Up to rigorous courses
School is in full swing with a number of activities in the works including a production of Westside Story, meeting of the math and debate teams and class photos.
