Back to School: Centennial High
It’s been just about a month since school in Howard County have been back in session. Today I take a brief look at Centennial High.
Built in 1977 and renovated in 2011, Centennial High sits on Centennial Lane near the intersection of Old Annapolis Road. The school is known for excellence in academics and is currently ranked 11th in the state. Seventy-eight percent of the 2013 graduating class have enrolled in 4 year colleges and an additional 13 percent attending 2 year colleges. Some of the school’s academic achievements include:
- James Clark School of Engineering – #1 Engineering source school in state
- University of Maryland Math Competition
- First Place National Speech and Debate
- TEN4U Scholarship Winner in Science
- National Merit Scholarship Program 2014 – 6 Semi-finalists; 39 Commended students
Centennial High boasts an active athletic program including lacrosse, wrestling, bowling, track, and volleyball. One-hundred-forty-two students participated in the Howard County Championships and 124 went on to regional competitions. Forty-six students competed in the State championships.
New Student Orientation will be held on August 21, 2014. Parents are to drop off students at 9 am to noon. Ninth Grade Parent Academy meeting will be held from 7-8:30 pm in the auditorium and a Ninth Grad Student Social will take place in the gym from 7-8:30 pm.
